I’m on the web…a lot. I work as a web designer, ontheweb.simplybridges.com, (working on a new design for this site, but that’s another story) and so it’s my job to be online.

Granted, while I’m working, I’m not surfing, but after the workday I surf to find articles that can help me get through the work day, be more creative, and enjoy a better quality of life.

One of the sites that I love to use to get me going down a path that hopefully doesn’t turn out to be an informational dead end is stumbleupon.com. From their web site:

StumbleUpon’s mission is to help you discover the best content on the web, by showing you sites tailored to your interests whenever you press the Stumble! button. Among all the fun things you can do on StumbleUpon, sharing sites with your friends is perhaps one of the greatest assets of having our toolbar handy on your browser.

As you set up your account, choose topics of interest for you to stumble through. This has been great in finding web sites with great information that I would have had a tough time finding. Also, if you find an article that you like, it can be easily added to your favorites for future viewing. If it’s the first time the article has been “liked” you get the honors to add it for all to see.

I’ve not been writing on the blog, not because nothing was on my mind or because I had nothing to say. (Those that know me would know that it’s not very often that I’m at a loss to talk.)

No, what’s been keeping me from writing on my blog, has been my blog.

Every time I would open my browser and go to my blog, I was distracted by my blog’s look. It was driving me crazy. I didn’t want a standard banner and multi-column look. I wanted a different look. I wanted to work with a WordPress theme where I could create my own look. If you’ve visited this site, you might have seen several different versions of my blog this month. Maybe you even stumbled on my site you might have seen that sometimes I was working on a trial and error basis. This went on for days, then weeks.

I had created a design for simplybridges.com and employed a design on a WordPress installation on the site. I had worked this design for a while and it seemed to work well for us on that domain. Since simplybridges.com is one of my domains for our coaching and consulting business, I decided to use some of the design elements on my blog here–mostly, the cut paper look and color scheme. While the first version of the design is working well for simplybridges.com , only time will tell if it will work for my blog here.

Hopefully I won’t keep getting distracted from writing.

i realized last week that i’d been blogging for just over a year on simplybridges.org. a couple of things i’ve noticed…

my blogs have gotten longer. i used to display 10 posts/page…now i’m down to 5 posts/page. sometimes i’ve had so much swimming in my head that i’ve just had to decide that i couldn’t write any more.
i go through periods of lots of writing and lulls where i’m at a loss for words.
blogging has really helped me get into scripture and study in a way that i hadn’t before.
i’ve developed this tendency to re-read passages over and over. i can stall on a chapter or verse for long periods of time–which i think is a good thing. those that know me have heard me say things like, “i think i could write a book on that verse/chapter.”
i began blogging on just verses and then started blogging through the bible.
i’m often late getting out of the door for work trying to finish a blog–i read the bible and blog from around 6am-8am.
blogging has really helped me realize a passion to read the bible and to try to understand the context of the ancient past and how it transcends time to life in the now.
